Administration and Management for Child Care

This Administration & Management for Child Care (AMCC) course provides a comprehensive overview of all aspects of leadership development. It’s ideal for experienced leaders who are looking to improve or expand on their program’s operations and anyone looking to become a child care leader in BC.

There are two options available for anyone looking to take this course. The online material for both courses is available on the BC EYPD Hub

Self-Guided Course

You will have three months to complete the videos, quizzes, and reflection questions at your own pace. Once you have completed the entire course, you will be eligible for a 12-hour certificate. 

Instructor-Guided Course

You will join a group of peers and an instructor in Zoom meetings as you work through the modules together and discuss how they relate to your own practice. This course includes 30 hours of instructor-guided time and 10 hours of self-guided learning through the modules, for a total of 40 hours.

Funding Available

In partnership with The Province of British Columbia and The Government of Canada, Westcoast Family Centres established another phase of the Administration and Management for Child Care program from early childhood educators and other child care professionals in BC. This phase will operate from April 1, 2024 to March 31, 2027. Through this funding we are excited to be able to offer the AMCC Instructor-Guided training for $100, reduced from $600.

Course Content

Students must use a laptop or desktop computer to take this course; it is very difficult to use a smartphone for this work.

This module covers best practices in child care governance and leadership. You’ll learn how to create (and improve) your policies and procedures, constitution and bylaws, philosophies, and codes of conduct. You’ll also receive critical information about written records, insurance, and governing legislation. This will help leaders who want to improve or expand on their program’s operations, as well as students looking to become child care leaders in BC.

A child care program’s employees are its most important asset. By following best practices in human resources, you’re more likely to retain staff for the long term. In this module, you’ll learn how to create (and improve) HR policies and procedures. You will take a deep dive into the entire employee cycle, from hiring and onboarding to performance management and termination.

Strong, effective financial management is critical for all child care organizations. This module covers the basics of financial management, including financial planning, bookkeeping, and reporting. This module include guidelines on creating effective policies & procedures, helping you directly apply the learnings to your own program. This will especially help leaders who want to have a better understanding of their program’s finances.

Every program needs solid enrollment and attendance practices, including robust policies and procedures to support this work. In this module, you'll dive into best practices to ensure you best serve the needs of your families and community. You'll cover everything from enrollment planning to waiting lists to custody and access issues.

This comprehensive module contains an overview of health and safety best practices, including guidance to help leaders create policies and procedures for their own program. It covers over a dozen areas pertinent to safe and healthy practices, including emergency response procedures, immunizations, field trip safety, and much, much more. This is essential for leaders who want to have greater peace of mind about the safety of their program’s operations.

A well-managed child care facility helps your program operate effectively and efficiently, and provides a physical setting that is appropriate and adequate for learning. In this module, you’ll learn how to ensure your facility is run in the safest, most efficient, quality, and cost-effective manner. It includes teachings on facilities policies and procedures, building records, inspections, and maintenance. This is helpful for leaders who want to improve the stewardship of their program environment.

This module supports leaders in creating safe, ethical, and quality programming that is relevant and respectful of communities and cultures. Learners will explore the creation of a curriculum and pedagogy, as well as programming policies to support their vision. The course will also review the creation of family handbooks and best practices in conducting program reviews. If you want to ensure your programming reflects the most current practices and learnings in inclusiveness, Truth & Reconciliation, the BC Early Learning Framework, and inquiry-based approaches, this is for you.

Communities are at the heart of child care programs. In this module, you will learn to nurture your community connections to build support and collaboration, attract families, and retain staff. This module also covers critical components of community advocacy, including how to advocate on behalf of families and educators, and educate the community on the value and necessity of child care. Explore the tools to help you communicate and connect with others, helping you build competencies in websites, social media and marketing. This is especially important for ECE leaders who wish to form an even stronger bond with their communities and to develop best practices in community connections.
